Wasootch Peak

Wasootch Peak is one of not too many hikes which are doable all year round. Small trailhead parking is on the left side of HW40 if you are coming from Calgary, about 200m before Mt. Allan Drive intersection. We always come early, so if you too come first, park your car on the road side perpendicularly. We tried it as a winter hike but too much snow and wind made it very difficult and we turned back a few hundred […]

Wasootch Peak (winter hike attempt)

Alltrails people keep saying that it’s good for all seasons, so we decided to try it in April, which in Alberta is pretty much still winter. Trail preview here. Small trailhead parking is just on the left side of HW40 if you are coming from Calgary, about 200m before Mt. Allan Drive intersection. We always come early, so if you too come first, park your car on the road side perpendicularly. Trail indeed was well packed, at first with steady […]

Natural Bridge & Emerald Lake (winter hike)

Emerald Lake is a natural glacier lake in the Rockies but less touristy than Lake Louise or Moraine Lake. You cannot see turquoise water during winter, but the views of surrounding mountains are still spectacular, and the trail around the lake is usually well packed. From Field, it takes around 15 minutes to arrive at the parking lot. The lake is visible from the parking lot and a wooden bridge crosses a portion of it leading to the Emerald Lake […]

Sarrail Ridge via Rawson Lake

Sarrail Ridge, reached via the Rawson Lake trail in Kananaskis Country, demands an elevation gain of approximately 725 meters (2,379 feet) from the trailhead. The route, often regarded as challenging due to its steep sections and rugged terrain, rewards persevering hikers with panoramic views of Upper Kananaskis Lake, Mount Indefatigable, and expansive valleys. While the ascent to Sarrail Ridge requires careful navigation and a good fitness level, the breathtaking scenery at the summit provides a remarkable reward for the effort, […]

Stanley Glacier

Very nice and quiet trail. If you go by HW 93 from Castle Junction, about 4km after Continental Divide on the left side there is a small parking lot, cannot miss it, – the trail starts from there. Very moderate incline through the forest with openings here and there; if you come early you’ll enjoy the sun on surrounding mountains. You cross a small bridge, then hike deeper into the canyon, and eventually it opens up with a gorgeous valley […]

Saddle Mountain

Saddle Mountain is not difficult, but the views from it are incredible, you just cannot get enough of them. The most challenging part probably is boulders hopping to reach the peak, but it’s not hard, it’s even kind of fun, simply watch your step and better have hiking poles. The trail begins at the left corner of Lake Louise main Instagram viewpoint next to parking lot, and inclines through the forest for about 3km; there are a few openings with […]
