Wasootch Peak (winter hike attempt)

Alltrails people keep saying that it’s good for all seasons, so we decided to try it in April, which in Alberta is pretty much still winter.

Trail preview here.

Small trailhead parking is just on the left side of HW40 if you are coming from Calgary, about 200m before Mt. Allan Drive intersection. We always come early, so if you too come first, park your car on the road side perpendicularly.

Trail indeed was well packed, at first with steady incline and not very steep. It goes through the forest first, opening with the views from time to time. First, looking back, you can see Mt. Kidd, Olympic Summit and Nakiska ski resort above the Kananaskis Village valley. Panorama of Kananaskis Village and Olympic Summit with Nakiska Ski Resort

Looking forward, – Kananaskis Peak, to which and to Kananaskis Falls, by the way, there is a fork on the right somewhere on this section of the trail, but somehow we missed it. Kananaskis Peak from Wasootch Peak trail

Approaching the treeline, the views become more and more impressive: Kananaskis Peak

Finally, after scrambling a few rocks (nothing technical, more like stairs), you are coming out to a small landing where it’s very convenient to take a couple of selfies, have some snack, and where you can actually see your destination: Wasootch Peak in winter.

This last part was hard. Ice clits did not help much on the snow, it was very windy on the slope, the packed trail was getting more and more steep, Wasootch Peak final ascent in winter so that time we managed only up to about the last spruce tree on the ridge and turned back, decided that we would do it again at some warmer time, better without snow and wind. But you can see that some people were much more persistent and they made it, – we spoke to a few of them on the way back, and consensus was “hard but totally doable”.

We did do this peak again, just three weeks later. Almost all the snow was gone, the trail was dry up to the summit, and we did it. There is a separate post about it.
